Home / About Us
Handmade Affair is a homegrown gifting and lifestyle brand creating thoughtful, handcrafted products that make everyday moments and special occasions feel a little more personal. While crochet remains at the heart of what we do, our collection also includes a growing range of handmade gifts, accessories, décor, and custom creations, all thoughtfully crafted with care.
Growing up, I watched my mother and elder sister spend hours crocheting beautiful pieces for third-party manufacturers. They were incredibly skilled, yet they earned very little because every order passed through several middlemen before reaching the customer. At the same time, I met few women who knew crochet but struggled to find regular work or fair opportunities. That never felt right to me.
Handmade Affair was born to bridge that gap, to connect the people who create beautiful handmade products directly with the people who value them. By reducing unnecessary middlemen, we hope to make handmade more affordable for customers while ensuring artisans receive fairer earnings for their work.
We're still a small business, and we know meaningful change doesn't happen overnight. But we're proud of the small steps we've taken. Today, my elder sister, a mother of two, is an integral part of Handmade Affair, contributing to our production while balancing her family on her own terms. My parents and other family members also step in whenever extra hands are needed, making Handmade Affair a true family effort.
We've had the opportunity to collaborate with Lakshya Pathshala, where we shared our crochet skills with young learners. Some were picking up a crochet hook for the very first time, while others learned to create new handmade products with us. Seeing their creativity grow has been one of the most rewarding parts of our journey.
Founder & Creative Head
Meet Sushmita, the heart behind Handmade Affair. She looks after product curation, sampling, design, and everything that turns an idea into something you'd love to gift.
After completing Class 12, she began her career as a primary school teacher and spent seven years in the classroom. But a trip to Banaras changed everything. The crochet skills she had learned from her elder sister since childhood suddenly felt like more than just a hobby, they felt like a possibility.
With little more than a crochet hook, a few embroidery threads worth around ₹50, and a dream, she started experimenting with handmade bookmarks and keychains. She shared them on Instagram, but when nothing happened, she gifted a few pieces to people simply to see how they were received. One of those recipients, Abhipray, became Handmade Affair's very first customer.
That first order wasn't just a sale, it was the belief that handmade work had value. Today, that same belief continues to shape Handmade Affair.
